Match Of The Day: Brock Lesnar VS The Rock SummerSlam 2002

Back in 2002 Brock Lesnar was a fresh new face in the WWE but he quickly made a name for himself. Brock Lesnar debuted in March of 2002, then won King of the Ring in June of 2002 which earned him a WWE Championship match at SummerSlam.

Brock’s meteoric rise to the top of WWE eventually saw him cross paths with The Rock who was on his way out due to the fact that he was becoming a big star in Hollywood. The dynamic in this match is something special because at the time the crowd resented The Rock because they knew he was leaving them for Hollywood. Even though The Rock was still technically a face he gets heavily booed while Lesnar who was playing the heel gets cheered. It makes for a pretty entertaining match.

The Rock still appeared in WWE part time for the next few years but this was for the most part his swan song and it’s one hell of a way to go out. On his way out the door he makes Brock Lesnar look like a million bucks as Brock becomes what was at the time the youngest WWE Champion in company history at 25 until Randy Orton was awarded that honor at the age of 24 two years later.

This match is a great display of how great these guys were in their prime and a must watch for anyone that’s never seen it before.
