MJF has had a huge year as he became the longest reigning AEW World Champion of all time and he managed to successfully defend his title several times. On Saturday night he defended the belt against Samoa Joe at the Worlds End pay-per-view and it was Samoa Joe who walked out with the AEW World Championship.
Ahead of the match MJF had indicated that he was working hurt and it looks like he could potentially be taking time away from wrestling. Fightful Select is reporting that MJF suffered a number of injuries throughout his AEW World Championship reign, but he was adamant that he wanted to see it through.
The expectation following AEW Worlds End is that MJF will be off TV immediately. MJF is said to be influential when it comes to his own creative, so there’s a chance things could change, but internally it’s expected that he’ll be taking time off.
Over the last few years MJF has made it a point to say that his contract with All Elite Wrestling is set to expire in 2024. The former AEW World Champion hasn’t told anyone any differently, but WWE sources noted that they haven’t had talks with MJF. Even though MJF won’t admit it most in AEW believe that he re-signed with All Elite Wrestling over a year ago.
