Remember the ECW December to Dismember pay-per-view? Most people would like to forget it, but it happened and it can’t be erased from history. The pay-per-view aired 9 years ago on this date. The pay-per-view is infamous for all the wrong reasons but was it really that bad? Looking back at the card, yeah, it was pretty bad.
WWE’s ECW revival was doomed from the start but this show drove a massive nail in the coffin of the brand. The show drew an attendance of 4,800 people and 90,000 buys on pay-per-view. That was the lowest buy-rate for a WWE branded pay-per-view before the introduction of the WWE Network. There really wasn’t much about the show that was enjoyable but the main event is certainly worth another look.
The main event saw CM Punk, Bobby Lashley, Hardcore Holly, Test, Big Show and Rob Van Dam compete for the ECW World Championship in an Extreme Elimination Chamber match. The match was just like a regular Elimination Chamber match only this one had weapons placed inside the pods. Sure, the timing of certain eliminations in the match was a little questionable, but the match is actually a pretty fun watch.
However Paul Heyman and Vince McMahon clashed on the direction of the match. Heyman has said in interviews that he was pushing for CM Punk to win the match but Vince McMahon didn’t like the idea. This led to an argument that caused Paul Heyman to break away from WWE for several years. Ironically, Heyman would rejoin WWE several years later as CM Punk’s manager.
We recommend you taking a second to relive some highlights from the match in the clip above. Then never, ever speak of this pay-per-view again.
