Smackdown has been going through an uncertain and somewhat turbulent time recently. Their WrestleMania title match has been up in the air because the winner of the Royal Rumble doesn’t want to face the WWE Champion.
In the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it is noted that Randy Orton is still planned to take on the WWE Champion in Orlando. Dave Meltzer noted that while Bray Wyatt appeared on the screen to laugh uncontrollably during the closing moments of Smackdown, Randy kept looking at that title.
It would be a waste for Randy to win the Royal Rumble match and not cash in the title opportunity. It was noted in the Observer that, “Orton didn’t win the Rumble for it to go nowhere.”
This storyline revolving around the uncertainty of Wyatt’s dance partner at the show of shows is just a placeholder to take up time before Mania. Orton is still expected to face Wyatt, although if Luke Harper wins his #1 contender match against AJ Styles he could be inserted in the WWE Championship match.
We’ve been saying this for weeks and Harper has been booked at house shows in matches against Wyatt and Orton so they might be getting used to working with each other for a reason.
That reason might be WrestleMania.
