For decades Vince McMahon decided who would get pushed to the top in WWE and it’s no big secret that Vince liked to push bigger Superstars. However, some smaller names have been able to break through such as former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio.
During a recent episode of the Kurt Angle Show, Kurt recently discussed a triple threat match that took place during the 9/26/02 episode of SmackDown which saw him face off against Rey Mysterio and Chris Benoit. According to Kurt Angle, Vince McMahon wasn’t big on pushing Rey Mysterio, but eventually he caved.
“Vince was not very keen on a smaller guy making it to the main event. As a matter of fact, you had to have a certain amount of size on you, especially in the ’80s and ’90s, you had to be like over 240 [pounds]. But then he kind of loosened up and started taking guys around 200, 185, 190 … Then Rey, he wasn’t folding with Rey, but somebody talked him into it and said, ‘Give him a chance.’ And he did it that night and from then on Rey was a main-eventer. Vince was wrong. I mean, Vince is hardly ever wrong, but he was wrong about this.”
Last week on SmackDown it was revealed that Rey Mysterio was moved to the blue brand, and he also earned himself a shot at the Intercontinental Championship later in the show. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
