A few months ago Kofi Kingston won the WWE Championship when he defeated Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35, but Kofi’s road to WrestleMania was a rocky one to be blunt.
On TV Vince McMahon created obstacles for Kofi to overcome week after week leading up to Mania, but backstage Vince had a very different reaction to Kofi’s success.
Kofi recently spoke to Sports Illustrated about his big WWE Title win and he noted that Vince was smiling when he walked backstage, and several WWE Superstars were there to greet him when he walked through the curtain.
“I was in complete disbelief when the ref’s hand hit the mat for the third time. So many things have to line up for that moment to happen. If I don’t meet Big E and Xavier, then I never get to this point. So I was hit with all of those thoughts. When I got to the back, Vince was smiling. Tyler Breeze was there waiting for me, The Usos were there, there were so many people there waiting for me.”
Kofi has been able to successfully defend his belt against all comers over the last few months, but Sunday at SummerSlam he will compete in his most personal WWE Title match so far when he puts the title on the line against Randy Orton.
