The first ever Universal Title match took place at SummerSlam in 2016, and Finn Balor defeated Seth Rollins to become the inaugural champion.
Unfortunately for Balor he suffered an injury during the match, and he had to vacate the title the next night. Balor’s misfortune created a big opportunity for Kevin Owens, as he went on to win the belt and hold it for several months.
Owens worked hard to become one of the top stars in WWE, but during a recent interview with talkSPORT he noted that Vince McMahon and Triple H pointed out to him that he forgot to enjoy his title reign.
“I was just too focused on trying to make it good, make it better, make it as good as it can be and I really, really didn’t enjoy it the way I should have. My wife was instrumental in making me realise that. My parents as well, even guys like Shawn Michaels, Triple H and even Vince McMahon himself, they’ve all told me that it seemed like I forgot to enjoy this part of things and if you’re not going to enjoy being the champion, then what are you going to enjoy in this industry?”
Whether or not Owens will ever win the title again remains to be seen, but it certainly seems to be one of the goals he wants to accomplish moving forward.
“I’d love to be able to get back there just so I can enjoy it properly, but we’ll see. All I can do is do my best to stay in that story and hopefully I get to take it from Roman [Reigns] or somebody else in the future.”
