Kenny Omega has become a hot topic as of late thanks to his six star match with Kazuchika Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 11. It’s been almost a month since the match took place at the Tokyo Dome and wrestling fans can’t stop talking about it.
There’s no denying that Kenny Omega is one of wrestling’s biggest stars right now, but there was once a time when he thought about quitting the business completely. Omega recently spoke to Vice and he noted that he was contemplating the idea of booking a farewell tour after he was released from his WWE developmental contract in 2006, but one match changed his mind.
“I was thinking I’d do a farewell tour locally (in Winnipeg). But then I ended up having a match with AJ Styles. It was because of that match that I had realized there were people that sort of wrestled the way I wished wrestling was. It gave me another reason to believe in wrestling again, that there must be other people like this in the world.”
Although things didn’t work out for Kenny Omega when he signed his developmental contract with WWE back in the day, Triple H recently confirmed that he is interested in possibly signing Omega.
After his six star match with Okada, Kenny Omega told the the world that he would be taking some time away from NJPW to reassess his future. Omega’s comments sent the internet into a frenzy as people immediately started talking about a potential move to WWE.
Kenny Omega has since confirmed that he plans to sign a new deal with NJPW, but he noted that he would be interested in going to WWE under the right circumstances.
“There are certainly factors, people there that I feel like I should tangle with, that would be an intriguing story. It’s up to them. I wasn’t able to tell my greatest stories in New Japan until they trusted me to run with the ball, either. It’s a two-way street. If they give me a blank slate, and they give me a brush and they say paint your greatest picture ever, take as much time as you need and use whatever colours you want, I can guarantee them that I will give them a classic. However, if they give me a Post-it note and a piece or charcoal and say here’s five minutes, I’ll do what I can, but it may not be a classic.”
Following the Royal Rumble there was some talk among fans about which match was better, Okada vs. Omega or Cena vs. Styles. Everybody seems to have their preference, but Omega recently told fans on Twitter that he could “easily” have AJ Styles and John Cena’s best match in WWE. We’ll just have to see if he backs up his words someday.
