On Sunday night the AEW Revolution pay-per-view aired live and Kenny Omega successfully defended the AEW World Title against Jon Moxley in an Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch.
After the match Eddie Kingston covered Jon Moxley as the fans prepared for the ring to explode, but the explosion was a dud, and people immediately started talking about the finish for all the wrong reasons.
Kenny Omega issued a statement to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noting that the finish was different from what was originally promised, and he acknowledged that the actual presentation was deflating.
“Yeah, it was really deflating to do so much preparation, test the explosions, have them be impressive in the rehearsal, and then have it be something so much different than what was promised,” said Omega. “It made me appreciate everyone who worked hard and did their part even more, though. But like you said, we really wanted to have a good one, and we added real barbed wire to help with the feeling of danger so we really risked a lot. Again, I loved the match, glad we did it, sucks about the finale.”
It’s being reported that the finish was tested multiple times, and worked great every time, except when it was supposed to.
