Jon Moxley made a name for himself on the independent scene before joining WWE and taking on the name Dean Ambrose, but now that he’s with AEW he’s back to being Jon Moxley.
AEW recently unveiled their new podcast AEW: Unrestricted, and Jon Moxley was the first guest on the show, and during the episode he revealed how he got his name.
According to Moxley he was about to step out for a match when another wrestler told him he looked like a character from “Varsity Blues” who had a similar name.
“This other wrestler guy said, ‘he looks like the Varsity Blues guy…Jonathan Moxley’…..that’s cool. I was too nervous to say yes or no and I was like ok..and literally, on the spot, in 90 seconds, that is where the name comes from.”
It’s worth noting that the character Moxley referred to was played by James Van Der Beek, and the character’s name was actually Jonathan “Mox” Moxon, but either way things seem to have worked out well for Jon Moxley.
