Last year Roman Reigns challenged Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam, and after years of trying to pick up a victory over The Beast, Roman finally managed to defeat Lesnar and win the belt.
Originally The Shield was supposed to reunite at the pay-per-view, and Jon Moxley explained on Wade Keller’s Pro Wrestling Podcast that they wanted to return at SummerSlam because they were worried the moment wouldn’t have as much of an impact if it took place on Raw the next night.
However, the former Dean Ambrose explained that Brock Lesnar got involved and then things changed.
Ultimately SummerSlam ended with Brock Lesnar taking advantage of Braun Strowman not knowing how to cash in the Money In The Bank contract by destroying him on the outside of the ring.
Lesnar then got back in the ring and lost the match after a spear from Reigns.
“How it ever went was Brock’s idea. At 6 p.m. before the show, everything was supposed to happen, the Shield coming out, this awesome stuff that the writers have been working on tirelessly to have this perfect ending to SummerSlam that was good. Brock comes in at 6 p.m. and changes everything. Vince is like, we are going to go with Brock’s idea. It made everyone else look stupid but Brock. And the writers are just sitting there watching it in the room and they’re like ‘Come on, we had it, we had this great ending.’ Everyone is suffering, again not my problem, anymore.”
