After waiting for Broken Matt Hardy to arrive in WWE for most of 2017, fans finally got the next best thing a few weeks ago when WWE officials finally decided to pull the trigger on the Woken Matt Hardy character.
Woken Matt Hardy has been feuding with Bray Wyatt over the past few weeks, and the character seems to be getting a positive response from the fans. However, at least one person in the wrestling community doesn’t think it’s working.
John Cena Sr. recently shared his thoughts on the gimmick during an interview with Boston Wrestling Sports, and he noted that he thinks Matt is making a mistake by using the gimmick in WWE.
“I don’t think it’s going to help anybody, I really don’t,” Cena replied. “I think Matt has kind of made a mistake, because what worked before, might not necessarily work again. And the fans were so agitated by Impact Wrestling and what’s been done, it’s kind of like, they’ve heard so much about it now, it’s kind of sour. It’s more frosting on the cake, but it’s too sweet.”
It seems a little too early to tell whether or not the gimmick will be a success in the long run, as Matt has mostly only appeared in pre-taped promo segments recently as opposed to working in from of the live crowd on TV.
One way or another, Matt and Bray will have to face off eventually, and if John Cena Sr. has his way then Bray will end the Woken Matt Hardy character.
“I’d put Bray Wyatt over! He would break the ‘Woken,’ Cena said. “He’d break him in half, the worms would cover him and it’s over. Bury him out back next to Sister Abigail, it’s over, it’s done with. No, I’m sorry, that’s not even fair to Bray Wyatt.”
