This week John Cena was honored when he was presented with the 2018 Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. Cena has 16 WWE World Championship wins under his belt, so he’s been more than recognized for his efforts in the ring, but this award was about recognized his efforts outside of the ring.
For years John Cena has been WWE’s ultimate good guy, and he’s granted 580 wishes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. While speaking with Sports Illustrated, Cena noted that he tries to let kids know John Cena the person, and John Cena the character aren’t all that different.
“It’s very much John Cena the character hoping, over the course of 30 minutes to an hour, to let them know John Cena the person, and to know they’re not too far apart—that me and the guy in the ball cap are the same.”
This month he’s set to return to WWE for a series of live events, but Cena recently confirmed that he won’t be appearing on TV.
Cena said that he’s in the “definite twilight” of his in-ring career, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to establish the company’s next big star.
“It’s a giant relay race, and I’m in the phase where I’m handing the stick off. My time is up. Someone else’s time is now.”
