When John Cena was working as the Doctor of Thuganomics in WWE, fans loved him. They couldn’t get enough of his schtick, and even though he was a heel, he was still getting a positive reaction from the crowd.
Then Cena started getting a massive push and he beat just about every top guy on the WWE roster, and the fans didn’t like that very much.
A good portion of the fans turned on John Cena, and although he’s supposed to be a babyface nowadays, he gets a mixed reaction wherever he goes. Cena has clearly embraced both the positive and negative reactions, and he recently told Crave Online that he loves the response he gets from the fans.
“I’ve kind of been like the guy who initially dealt with it. I use Roman Reigns as a great example, he’s going to have to deal with this sort of environment but I love it because I’ve used it as a way to send a great message,” Cena said. “I don’t go out with a big base drum and beat on it and say, ‘Never Give Up’ over and over again. It’s just how I am as a human being and you try to lead by example. Don’t be afraid to be who you are.”
John Cena has been able to work the mixed reaction angle better than anyone in WWE history, and he’s also been on top of the WWE longer than anyone as well.
In January John Cena became a 16 time WWE World Champion and there’s absolutely no denying that his resume is impressive. However, John Cena says it’s not up to him to decide what his legacy will be.
“That’s going to be up to those who write that stuff. It’s going to be up to folks like you, man. Every day I just try to do the best I can,” Cena said. “I try to have the best understanding of how lucky I am and try to use all of my platforms to try and do the best I can and try to help as many people as I can.”
John Cena will add another page to the massive book that is his legacy on Sunday when he teams up with Nikki Bella to take on The Miz and Maryse at WrestleMania 33.
