AJ Styles and John Cena have been feuding for months now, and a few weeks ago Cena made his return to SmackDown Live, and declared that he would be challenging for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble.
Over the past few weeks both men have done a great job hyping up the match both on SmackDown and Talking Smack. Sunday night both stars got a chance to back their words up, as John Cena attempted to win his 16th World Title, and AJ Styles attempted to walk out of the Alamodome with the championship belt he’s been holding since September of 2016.
As soon as AJ Styles’ music hit the crowd went wild, and they continued to cheer for Styles as he made his way down to the ring. After AJ’s music finished up, John Cena made his way out to the usual mixed reaction from the fans.
AJ Styles took control early in the match as the crowd chanted for both men. Cena tried for his shoulder tackle combo, but AJ countered with a hurricanrana and then a forearm to Cena’s head for a two count. Cena managed to get the upper hand and he set Stlyes up for the five knuckle shuffle, but AJ was one step ahead and he hit John with a German suplex followed by a facebuster.
They wrestled back and forth until AJ put Cena down with a torture rack/powerbomb combo. Styles tried to follow up with the Phenomenal Forearm, but Cena got him with the Attitude Adjustment. AJ kicked out at two.
Cena looked really angry after Styles kicked out, and he started flexing in the corner as AJ got up. Cena then hit AJ with a brutal clothesline, but AJ kicked out. Cena then did the same thing in a different corner, but then shifted back to the same corner. He looked really, really intense. Styles ducked the clothesline this time around and hit Cena with a Pele Kick, then he followed up with the Phenomenal Forearm for a two count.
AJ attacked Cena when he got up, but Cena countered with an Electric Chair Drop.
AJ and Cena then traded punches back and forth while the crowd cheered Styles and booed Cena. Styles set him up for the Styles Clash, but Cena reversed it into the Attitude Adjustment, but then Styles rolled him up into the Calf Crusher. Cena powered out and put Styles in the STF as the crowd went wild.
They rolled around for a while and then AJ locked in the STF on Cena. John Cena stood up and then placed AJ Styles in the figure-four. Cena later deadlifted AJ Styles and slammed him down on the mat.
Cena then went to the top rope for a leg drop, but AJ powerbombed him and then followed up with the Styles Clash. He rolled Cena over for the pin but Cena kicked out.
Styles went for a springboard 450 splash, but Cena put his knees up to block it. Cena then went for a sunset flip but Styles kicked out.
Styles went for the Styles Clash, but Cena catapulted him into the corner then picked him up on his shoulders before taking him down with a cutter.
Cena hit an Attitude Adjustment from the second rope and he looked very confident as he pinned AJ Styles, but Styles kicked out. The crowd went absolutely crazy.
Cena went for the Attitude Adjustment again, but Styles countered with the Styles Clash. AJ couldn’t capitalize because he was winded, so he rolled out of the ring and went for the Phenomenal Forearm, but Cena countered with an AA, then rolled AJ up and picked him up to hit the AA again for the win.
