It’s been a while since fans have seen John Cena in the ring, as he’s focusing on his film career, and he’s currently busy promoting Fast & Furious 9.
While doing promotion for the film John Cena referred to Taiwan as a country when he called it “the first country” to watch Fast & Furious 9 during an interview with TVBS, and Cena found himself on the receiving end of some major backlash.
Cena went on to address his comments, and he posted a video apology in Mandarin on the Sina Weibo platform.
“Hi China, I’m John Cena. I’m in the middle of Fast & Furious 9 promotions. I’m doing a lot of interviews. I made a mistake in one of my interviews. Everyone was asking me if I could use Chinese… the staff [of the movie] gave me a lot of information, so there was a lot of interviews and information.”
“I made one mistake. I have to say something very, very, important now. I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry about my mistake. I apologize, I’m very sorry. You must understand that I really love, really respect China and the Chinese people. My apologies. See you.”
John Cena’s apology apparently wasn’t enough for some people, as several fans continued to criticize him.
“Please say in Chinese that Taiwan is part of China. Otherwise, we won’t accept it,” wrote one Weibo user.
Fast & Furious 9 was released in China earlier this month, the film is set to be released in the United States next month.
It’s rumored that John Cena could be returning to WWE when fans return in July. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
