It was reported a while back that John Cena was being considered for the lead role in a Duke Nukem film which is being developed, and the producers of the film recently confirmed that Cena is on board to play the character.
One of the producers noted that when it comes to creating the film, it’s all about getting the tone right, and he used “Deadpool” as an example of a film that perfected its own tone.
John Cena echoed that sentiment while talking to Screen Rant, and he noted that he feels blessed to be part of the film, and he hopes the movie does the franchise justice.
“I think that’s the direct attachment and I’m very honored to be attached to that but that is a very fragile franchise. That was one that was very timeline specific, that is 1990s to the hilt. So, once again, it reflects upon story. The story has to come in dead-on balls, man. Like it has to come in told correct, told in a palatable sense for this generation, which you’re walking on eggshells…you can’t not be Duke Nukem, but you can’t make the wrong move…so I’m…what a blessing to be attached to that, a name like that, and I just hope development does the franchise justice.”
At this point the film doesn’t have a script, so it will probably be a while before it hits the big screen. But let’s hope for Cena’s sake that this ends up being one of those rare instances where a video game movie is well received.
