Jerry Lawler Opens Up About Relationship With Jim Carrey As Andy Kaufman

A very special film was released in 1999 depicting the life of Andy Kaufman. Fans really didn’t know what to expect when the curtain was pulled away to reveal the true man behind the famous foreign man character on SNL and chauvinist on television egging women on to wrestle in unfair inter-gender matches.

The film was as accurate as possible including a good-sized role from Jerry “The King” Lawler who had a feud with Kaufman back in the day that made Memphis wrestling a ton of money.

Andy Kaufman loved pro wrestling and couldn’t believe he was being invited to take part in the genre of entertainment he had loved for so long. He never cashed any of his checks from Memphis wrestling and every one of them were found stashed away after his death.

Nearly twenty years ago, Jim Carrey portrayed the legendary Andy Kaufman in “Man On The Moon” and plenty of backstage footage was filmed during that time. It was a treasure trove of rare moments that Carrey had stored away in his offices all this time.

Thanks to the new Netflix documentary, “Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond Featuring A Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention Of Tony Clifton” fans can get a special look at what it was like to film this groundbreaking film.

During the documentary, it comes to light how Jim Carrey embodied Andy Kaufman so much during the filming that he found himself taking it a bit too far at times. Let’s just say kayfabe ran thick through Carey’s veins during production as he poked and prodded The King every chance he could get.

One extremely rare scene captured Lawler snapping and going for Andy Kaufman… I mean Jim Carey. As production assistants, and Bob Zmuda alike pulled Lawler off of Carey he wanted to make it clear he could hook the Hollywood juggernaut anytime he wanted to. It was an amazing moment in the documentary that was a little jaw-dropping, to be honest.

Jerry Lawler spoke briefly about the documentary on a recent episode of Dinner With The King where he went into some more detail about what it was like to film a movie with such a combative costar in Carrey.
