AJ Styles successfully defended his WWE World Championship against Dean Ambrose and John Cena at No Mercy, and Styles made his way to the ring on SmackDown to brag about the big victory.
Styles announced that he had found his next opponent, and he called for his opponent’s music. AJ was then interrupted by Dean Ambrose who stepped up to AJ Styles and told him that he wasn’t done with him.
AJ then introduced his opponent, James Ellsworth, and told Dean that he would be facing Ellsworth tonight in a non-title match. AJ told Dean to leave, but Dean told him that he wanted to sit ringside and watch the match.
General Manager Daniel Bryan came out to the stage and told AJ Styles that he’s the one that makes the matches, and then he made Styles vs. Ellsworth official. Bryan then told Dean Ambrose that he wouldn’t be able to sit ringside, because he would be the special guest referee for the match.
Throughout the match Dean played games with AJ and made it hard for him to get the victory. The end came when Dean got fed up with AJ, hit him with Dirty Deeds. Dean then placed James Ellsworth on AJ and did a fast count.

Later in the show AJ Styles confronted Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan he threatened Bryan. Shane told him that he shouldn’t be angry at anyone else because he asked for the match. McMahon then told AJ that his loss against James Ellsworth is official.
Styles stormed out in anger, then Bryan told Shane that he has an idea for Ellsworth for next week.
