Connor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather might go down as the biggest fight of all time. If it’s not regarded as the biggest, it certainly has to be in the running. It seems like everyone was watching to see which one of these mega stars would reign supreme.
Bryan Alvarez noted on Wrestling Observer Radio how the UFC Fight Pass website actually crashed and went down during the event leaving tons of fans unable to see the fight. In fact, due to all of the problems with people trying to get the fight, they actually delayed the start of the main event.
“Knowing what I know about cable companies, there were tons and tons of people who were unable to get this fight,” Alvarez said.
“I know a lot of people who had trouble” Dave Meltzer replied. “The thing is here if you had a problem and a lot of people had problems it was a 90-minute wait on the phone. The thing is — and I guess the UFC thing crashed as you mentioned — the thing is you’ve got to know the kind of demand there is going to be because two years ago you had this demand [with Mayweather vs Pacquiao] so you should know what you’re dealing with and yes everyone was understaffed.”
Meltzer said he was told by someone that there was no way the cable companies could prepare for that kind of an influx in demand. “You just can’t have people for a night like this.” Dave continued, “you can have it for a normal boxing match or a normal big UFC show but not for a four million or a five million buy show or whatever the number’s gonna end up being.”
Still, the pay-per-view outlets really should have been a little bit better prepared for this fight. After all, they had to have known how important it was because they were probably watching too.
