The WrestleMania Backlash pay-per-view aired live on Sunday night and several titles were on the line. Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode were scheduled to defend the SmackDown Tag Team Titles against Rey and Dominik Mysterio, but during the WrestleMania Backlash Kickoff Show they attacked Dominik backstage.
Before the match kicked off the cameras showed Rey and Dominik backstage as Rey told Dominik that he couldn’t let him compete, and that he was going to handle it on his own.
Rey Mysterio entered the ThunderDome alone, then entered the ring and took on both Roode and Ziggler by himself. The numbers game certainly worked against Rey Mysterio, but he tried his best to get the momentum on his side.
At one point Mysterio took down both Ziggler and Roode, and then Dominik walked down to the ring while clutching his ribs and reached for the tag.
Ziggler and Roode isolated Rey for a while, and when he got the opportunity to tag Dominik he was hesitant to tag in his injured son, but eventually Dominik ended up tagging in. Roode and Ziggler ended up getting the upper hand again, and Rey Mysterio tagged back in.
Rey hit Roode with 619, then he tagged in Dominik who hit the splash on Roode from the top rope to win the SmackDown Tag Team Titles. Rey and Dominik Mysterio are now the first father son team in WWE history to hold the tag team titles.
