For years fans wondered if Sting would ever join WWE, and he finally debuted with the company when he made a surprise appearance at the Survivor Series pay-per-view in 2014. A few months later Sting competed on the Grandest Stage of Them All when he faced off against Triple H at WrestleMania 31.
It was Triple H who picked up the victory in the match, and WWE Hall of Famer Road Dogg recently noted on Busted Open Radio that originally Triple H was supposed to face The Rock at the following WrestleMania, so WWE wanted to keep Triple H strong.
Road Dogg also talked about Vince McMahon’s reaction to Sting, and he indicated that the former CEO acted as if he didn’t know anything about the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
“Vince did not act like he knew who Sting was, or he knew of Sting’s gravitas. He literally asked us ‘Was he over?’ Almost like he didn’t, and again, I don’t know if it’s a performance or if it’s real, but if it was a performance, he deserves an Oscar. I feel he doesn’t watch that, he didn’t watch that. He was so laser-focused on his stuff, that stuff outside of his bubble doesn’t compute. So he’d literally ask us, on several occasions ‘This guy’s going to get a reaction, right?’ And we all were like ‘Hey, this guy is the frontrunner of their show. He was the flagship talent of their show for 20-25 years.’ Again, I think the outcome was all booking and politics that caused the finish of that match. And then it all fell apart, and it felt like ‘We got the wrong guy over.'”
Sting only wrestled a few matches for WWE before he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. During his Hall of Fame speech he announced his retirement, but he has since returned to the ring in AEW where he appears on TV on a semi-regular basis and wrestles from time to time.
