When a professional wrestling show airs live anything can happen as fans found out when they tuned into the 2005 Royal Rumble. The 30 man Royal Rumble match came down to Batista and John Cena, but the finish was botched when both men went over the top rope then hit the floor at the same time.
Vince McMahon made his way out to the ring to announce that Batista and Cena would continue to do battle until an official winner was declared. As Vince was entering the ring he torn both of his quadriceps.
On a recent episode of Something to Wrestle, WWE Hall of Famer JBL recalled what happened when Vince McMahon got backstage after tearing both his quads, and he noted that Vince threatened to fire anyone who looked at him.
“When Vince came backstage, he either collapsed or had to sit down and he literally said, ‘If anybody looks at me, I’ll fire you.’ He walked out with two torn quads, that’s not humanly possible. When he came backstage, he was in a horrible mood. I was there and I saw the whole thing.”
Obviously the finish for the 2005 WWE Royal Rumble match didn’t go as planned, but JBL claimed Vince McMahon loves when things go wrong because it gives him something to fix.
“I can tell you what Vince thinks about it: Vince loves it. Vince loves when things go wrong because he gets to fix them. What Vince hates is boredom. He hates when things are just going right or just going kind of meandering along. But this is wrestling, this is what’s so great about wrestling. S*** goes wrong, horribly wrong, you get to fix it live in front of the whole world. There’s nothing greater than that.”
