Damian Priest made history when he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract at WrestleMania 40 as he defeated Drew McIntyre to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career. Gunther also made history a few months ago when he won the King of the Ring tournament to earn a title shot at SummerSlam.
Business has picked up on the road to SummerSlam as the feud between Gunther and Damian Priest has become heated. There was a lot of anticipation heading into the title match the champion finally clashed with the challenger on Saturday night.
As soon as the bell rang Priest charged at Gunther and hit him with an elbow to the head. Priest landed several strikes and gained the upper hand early on when he connected with a flatliner on the Ring General.
They battled back and forth and Damian Priest busted Gunther open with a series of chops. Damian Priest repeatedly hit Gunther with kicks to the midsection to slow him down. Gunther managed to hit a running dropkick followed by a powerbomb, but Damian Priest kicked out.
Gunther went for another powerbomb which Damian Priest got out of. Damian hit South of Heaven for a two count. The champion put his arms out to signal for the Razor’s Edge. He picked Gunther up and the Ring General hit Damian Priest with two lariats. Damian told Gunther to bring it, so Gunther delivered a big boot to the champion’s face. Priest sat up and told him to bring it once again then Gunther chopped him down.
Finn Balor made his way out to the ring and started trying to hype Damian up. The champion tried to get up, but Gunther repeatedly knocked him back down. Gunther taunted Finn Balor who was standing at ringside then hit Balor with a big boot.
Damian Priest saw Balor get hit and he became enraged. He got back up and hit Gunther with two clotheslines. Priest hit the Razor’s Edge then South of Heaven. He pinned Gunther, but Balor turned on Damian Priest and put Gunther’s leg on the rope to break the count.
The champion watched the replay on the big screen and he looked shocked. Damian went to go after Balor on the outside of the ring, but Gunther grabbed him from behind and locked in a sleeper. Finn Balor looked on with discussed as Priest started to fade. Damian Priest powered out of it and pinned Gunther for a two count. He went after Balor, but Gunther grabbed him then hit a powerbomb and locked in the sleeper again.
The referee checked on Priest and determined that he was out. Gunther was then announced as the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Finn Balor stared at Damian Priest from the outside while Gunther celebrated with the belt inside the ring.
