Gunther won the Intercontinental Championship in June of 2022 when he defeated Ricochet and he’s been proudly defending the title belt ever since. Recently Gunther reached another major milestone in his career as he passed 281 days with the belt making him the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in 35 years.
It seems that Gunther has taken his career to the next level with his current IC Title reign, but he still has a ways to go before he can potentially beat Honky Tonk Man’s reign which lasted 454 days. Overall Gunther has the fourth longest single run with the belt with only Greg Valentine, Randy Savage and Honky Tonk Man ahead of him.
Soon Gunther will surpass Greg Valentine’s 285 days with the Intercontinental Championship, but it remains to be seen if he will end up passing Randy Savage’s 414 day reign or Honky Tonk Man’s 454 day reign as he has a big title defense coming up.
It was determined on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown that Gunther will defend the Intercontinental Championship against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 39. It will be interesting to see if Gunther ends up dropping the belt on the Grandest Stage of Them All or if his reign continues beyond WrestleMania. Stay tuned for updates.
