In a theme that continues to get more treacherous as the months go by, Global Force Wrestling is carrying on the tradition of TNA and Impact Wrestling by figuring out new ways to make money. But this time their money making technique might have a few victims that never need to take a hit.
Sports Illustrated is reporting the latest round of contracts includes a portion which requires talent to give 10% of all independent bookings back to GFW. If that seems logical then this next part still might not sit too well with you. Along with demanding a percentage of their worker’s indie dates, Global Force Wrestling is also keeping 100% of all merchandise sold through the company.
While this only applies to the latest series of contracts, if this theme sticks it might not bode well for them. Who knows what other top performers the company might lose when contract renegotiations come back around.
Pro wrestlers really rely on their indie dates and merchandise royalties to subsidize their income. Sometimes they can make more in the indies and with their merch money than they actually get from their bigger deals with GFW. So this kind of hit to a performer’s pockets might eventually take its toll on the roster.
If it doesn’t affect overall morale it would be a big surprise. On a related note, the Sports Illustrated article also revealed Alberto is and isn’t getting paid under his suspension.
Alberto was paid for all of his television appearances he made which will continue to air. Since he’s on a “per appearance” deal he’s neither on a paid or unpaid suspension.
If this information doesn’t make you very happy you’re probably not alone. But only time will tell how this strategy will go on to change the greater scheme of things and bottom line for Jeff Jarrett and Company.
