CM Punk is currently one of the top stars in AEW, but his history with WWE has been well documented. As Punk was climbing the card in WWE he clashed with John Cena on several occasions, and it sounds like there may have been some tension between CM Punk and Cena.

Former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr. recently discussed Punk’s relationship with John Cena on his Wrestling With Freddie podcast, and he recalled a time when Triple H commented on the situation while saying that Punk hated Cena because he would have acted the same way if he were in Cena’s spot.

“[Punk] wasn’t loved at WWE and not all of it was his fault. Punk hated John Cena, not hated him, but hated what he represented, right, and that’s that what the company was behind. And I remember one time Hunter saying, ‘As different as they are, the reason he hates John Cena so much is because he knows if he was in that same spot he would act in the exact same way.’ … To hear the rumblings of AEW basically saying he’s acting the way John Cena did back then it’s just like, d**n near everything I disagreed with Hunter on, he was right. He just knows.”

CM Punk recently returned to the ring last week on Dynamite and he was defeated by Jon Moxley in a match that lasted a little over the three minutes. Following the victory Jon Moxley is now the undisputed AEW World Champion. It is expected that Punk and Moxley will be facing off in a rematch at the All Out pay-per-view on September 4. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
