At WrestleMania 35 Kofi Kingston did the unthinkable when he defeated Daniel Bryan to become the WWE Champion for the first time in his career. Many fans felt that the title win was well deserved, and Kofi went on to defend the WWE Championship for several months before dropping it to Brock Lesnar in October of 2019 on SmackDown.
Brock Lesnar made short work of Kofi as he squashed him to win the belt, and there was no follow up to the loss as Kofi was immediately removed from the title picture.
Former WWE writer Chris Dunn noted on the Public Enemies Podcast that originally Kofi Kingston was supposed to address the loss in a promo the next week on SmackDown, but the segment was cut from the show.
“I think the feeling was that Brock wasn’t going back to Kofi. He was going [to face] Cain and they wanted to build the Cain match, and they felt like that dominant of a performance was the way to do that. I think it s*cked.”
“He was gonna have an interview the next week on SmackDown and be able to respond to it. Those types of promos are kind of make-or-break promos. Due to time, because it was at the end of the show, it was cut for time.”
