For many years John Cena was the face off the WWE, but he wasn’t exactly getting the reaction that some expected him to get. Fans were anything but quiet whenever Cena entered the arena, but he often got booed despite the fact that he was clearly positioned to be a babyface.
The negative reaction caused a lot of people to call for a John Cena heel turn, but WWE never turned him, which has left a lot of people to wonder what could have been.
During an appearance on the We Watch Wrestling podcast, former WWE writer Matt McCarthy revealed that at one point there was talk of Cena turning heel. However, Vince McMahon wanted Cena to follow in Bret Hart’s footsteps and the idea was for him to only be a heel in some locations, but a face in other locations.
“Vince kept trying to figure out how do we do like a Bret Hart thing? Where he’s a heel in some places, but he’s a babyface in the rest of the places.”
“Cena was like, ‘If I’m going heel, I want to go full heel,’ and it did get close enough to the point where, and I’m sure he still has this gear, like Cena had gear made for the heel turn, you know? No longer the jorts.”
At this point it’s not clear if we’ll ever see a John Cena heel turn as the 16 time WWE World Champion is busy focusing on his acting career nowadays. It’s rumored that Cena is returning to TV next month when WWE goes back on the road. Stay tuned for updates.
