Sometimes wrestlers make a successful transition from wrestling to the world of MMA, and other times not so much. But one way or another former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger is going to be giving it his all, because Swagger announced today during the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani that he’s signed a deal to fight for Bellator.
According to Swagger he’s set to make his debut with Bellator sometime in 2018. Over the summer we spoke to Jack Swagger and he noted that he was open to the idea of doing MMA.
“Yeah absolutely. I’m training right now. Not specifically towards anything, but everything at the same time. So, if you look at it from my perspective — former All-American, 10 years exposure on a big TV show; there’s a big opportunity there to make money. As long as you don’t get your face pounded in, and there’s a big chance of that happening, so, there’s a lot of reward to it. But of course this is no bulls**t, this is the real thing, so there’s a lot of risk with it as well. But I would definitely consider stepping in there. I think it would only help me.”
Fellow former WWE Superstar Bobby Lashley has found success with Bellator as he’s competed at 5 Bellator events.
Jack Swagger left WWE earlier this year after requesting his release and he’s since been wrestling on the independent circuit.
Swagger noted that he’s “not on that CM Punk schedule” and he would like to fight twice in 2018. He said he’s happy with the money, and he’s set for 6 fights. He hopes to fight for the first time in the second quarter of 2018, and mentioned April or May as possible months where he could debut.
He said he doesn’t know who his first opponent is, but he doesn’t care he’s just excited to fight. Swagger added that if he wins the title in Bellator he thinks it would be a bigger than winning a title in WWE.
