John Cena has been in the professional wrestling business for decades now and throughout the course of his career he’s faced a wide variety of wrestlers. Back in 2010, Jake Hager (formerly known as Jack Swagger) teased a potential Money in the Bank cash in on John Cena as he was the WWE Champion at the time, but ultimately Hager ended up cashing in on Chris Jericho to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

During a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Jake Hager was asked if there’s any truth to the rumor that John Cena refused to put him over and he said, “Oh yeah, he absolutely refused to do it.”

When Hager was asked if John Cena told him that directly he added, “I was told that was what happened. Because the original plan was I was gonna beat him Monday night on Raw and not do the tease. But I’m a young guy. I’ve been there for a cup of coffee, so what are you gonna do? But I’m not the only guy he’s done that to, he did that throughout his career. I was surprised to see what happened with him and truth lately, because usually he tried to take that glory. But I feel like this time, he’s the one who said we better go with Truth and get him back here.”

Jake Hager finished up with WWE in 2017 after he was released from his contract. He went onto compete on the independent scene before signing with AEW in 2019. Hager finished up with AEW in 2024 and has since confirmed that he’s retired from professional wrestling.
