Over the weekend fans saw Trick Williams defeat Dominik Mysterio to become the new NXT North American Champion at No Mercy, but that wasn’t the original plan. Originally Dominik Mysterio was set to defend the belt against Mustafa Ali before Ali was released.
Fightful Select reports that there’s an incorrect report making the rounds claiming that Dominik Mysterio was set to retain the NXT North American Championship over Mustafa Ali. However, it’s being reported that Mustafa Ali was actually supposed to win the NXT North American Championship before he was released. This is just one of the reasons why NXT higher ups were frustrated with Ali getting cut.
Dominik Mysterio was always set to retain the NXT North American Championship against Dragon Lee during the September 25 episode of Raw, but original plans called for Mustafa Ali to interfere and cost Dragon Lee the match. The idea was that the interference would set up a triple threat match for NXT No Mercy with Mustafa Ali winning the title.
There’s no word on where things would have gone following the title match, but Shawn Michaels and NXT creative had plans for Mustafa Ali heading into March of 2024.
