Throughout WWE history a number of wrestlers have gone through multiple gimmicks and name changes. When Joe Hennig first signed with the company he used his real name, but eventually it was changed to Michael McGillicutty, and then Curtis Axel in 2013.
Hennig recently shared his honest reaction to the name change while speaking with Monte & The Pharaoh, and he revealed that he argued against the name change.
“I argued, argued, argued, all that kind of stuff, and I just kept going through and just kept on performing to the people [proving] that I could go either babyface or heel, either way, whatever. I did everything I could. Finally, I lost my mind. I said, ‘Dude, I’m done,’ so that’s when Curtis Axel evolved.”
Nowadays NXT has solidified itself as WWE’s third brand, but during the early days of NXT it was more like a game show. Hennig was a contestant on the second season of NXT, and he reflected on what NXT used to be like while calling that era of the brand a “disaster.”
“Dude, NXT in my era was a disaster. They would do cr*p to us to make us look like cr*p. It was a shame, a shame on all of us. All of us that worked hard, like Bray, Husky Harris, all these guys worked their a**es off.”
