For years Roman Reigns was pushed as the top babyface in WWE, but the fans often rejected him which resulted in WWE’s top face getting booed. With the fans already booing Roman Reigns many people called for a heel turn. However, WWE continued to push Roman as a face until he eventually turned in 2020.
Matt Hardy recently discussed Vince McMahon’s thoughts on Roman turning during an episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy while indicating that the former CEO wasn’t keen on the idea.
“I remember Vince was so hesitant for so many years to turn Roman into a heel. Roman as the top babyface, which he was being pushed and promoted as during that time, I knew whenever they decided to turn him heel, because fans were already booing, they were ready and it was gonna be easy to do, and all it was gonna do ultimately was make him into a much bigger star.”
Matt Hardy went on to praise Roman’s heel run so far when he added, “Yeah, I think it’s been really good. I honestly believe the biggest difference in being successful as a top draw as a heel nowadays is the fans because they just understand better. It’s kind of been whittled down to a smaller niche of pro wrestling fans, and they really get what’s going on.”
Roman Reigns will defend his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Logan Paul at the Crown Jewel premium live event on November 5. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
