WWE went all out with the first ever women’s Royal Rumble match on Sunday night, and the women of WWE fought for a title opportunity in the main event of the show.
The match was full of surprises, and it featured quite a few familiar faces such as Molly Holly, Trish Stratus, Lita, Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool and more.
PWInsider reports that WWE wanted to bring back names from the past because they wanted the match to be a celebration of all the women who helped build up the WWE women’s division over the years, and also because so many of the former stars reached out to let the company know they wanted to be involved.
Some of the returning stars were booked weeks ago, while others weren’t confirmed for the match until Raw 25 last week.
Former WWE Women’s Champion Molly Holly recently publicly denied that she would be appearing in the match and claimed that she wasn’t in ring shape, but Holly and Michelle McCool were actually the first names contacted regarding the match.
Molly Holly trains at a wrestling school called The Academy in Minneapolis owned by Ken Anderson and Shawn Daivairi every week, so she was already in shape for the match before she got the call.
