It’s certainly not uncommon for WWE to change the names of Superstars when they join the company, but sometimes talent are allowed to continue using the name that they’ve built up before they signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment. When EC3 signed with WWE in 2018 there was a lot of speculation regarding what he would be called when he returned to TV, but ultimately he kept the EC3 name.
During a recent appearance on The Wrestling Outlaws, EC3 explained that he made it clear he didn’t want to change his name when he joined WWE. However, WWE wanted to put together a list of potential names, so he went out of his way to add the worst names possible.
“So I trademarked EC3, and when I went to NXT, they asked if they wanted to change the name or can we change the name. I was like, ‘I don’t really want to; it’s three characters, it’s easy to chant, [and] it has recognition.’ So they said, ‘We’ll just throw some names on the list.'”
“I said okay. So to avoid changing the name, I put some of the worst possible names on this list. Like they all had E, and they all had C. So at the top of the list was something like Edgar Crushington. They were just like, ‘Whatever, just go ahead.”
