For most of 2017 fans have been waiting for Broken Matt Hardy to make his debut on Raw, and now the character has finally joined the WWE roster in the form of Woken Matt Hardy. Woken Matt appeared on this week’s episode of Raw in a pre-taped promo which also featured Bray Wyatt, and every time Matt appeared on the screen he got a loud reaction from the fans.
But as we’ve seen in the past, when it comes to WWE, company officials have always favored Jeff over Matt, and Jeff has reached main event status with the company while Matt hasn’t.
It always seemed that Matt Hardy had a glass ceiling that he couldn’t break through during his previous runs with WWE, but he shattered that glass ceiling outside of the company when he first introduced the Broken Matt Hardy character to the world.
Broken Matt Hardy became one of the most popular characters in all of wrestling after the gimmick took off, and The Broken Hardys were often the central focus of Impact Wrestling. But will Matt find the same success with Woken Matt Hardy in WWE?
Dave Meltzer recently discussed the topic on Wrestling Observer Radio, and he noted that it’s likely the character will get over, but Matt could be at a disadvantage because the character wasn’t created by Vince McMahon.
“The whole feud is about the character and how well the character will do. I don’t know how far Vince will let this thing go. Number one: it’s not his idea. It came from somewhere else, from another promotion. That’s usually not a good sign. It’s obviously going to get really great reactions in buildings. I think. At first I’m sure it will. But Matt as a single, they never push him past a certain level, and I’m not sure that’s going to change.”
Of course Matt completely defied all expectations that have been set for him when he created the character, and now that Woken Matt is being featured on a much bigger platform, hopefully Matt will be able to take his career to new heights.
It’s worth noting that as of this writing, Woken Matt’s promo is the second most viewed clip from Raw on WWE’s YouTube channel behind Roman Reigns’ match with Jason Jordan.
Only time will tell what the future holds for Woken Matt Hardy, but one way or another there seem to be many fans out there who are happy he’s finally on Raw.
