Asuka’s WWE debut at TLC was a sight to be seen. But it didn’t really come off the way most thought it would. After all, it took Asuka longer than thirty seconds to defeat Emma.
Most people were under the impression this match would be a breeze for The Empress Of Tomorrow but it didn’t appear to be a simple task as most assumed it would be.
But no matter how many fans were excited to finally see Asuka on the WWE main roster, it turns out Edge and Christian aren’t her biggest fans at this juncture.
“I’m sure I’ll get lambasted for this, but I don’t get the Asuka thing. I really don’t. Like, she’s fine and she’s solid but I don’t know,” Edge revealed on E&C’s Pod Of Awesomeness.
Christian chimed in to give his insight on the situation as well, “I think it happens not with just her but with a lot of people when there’s certain hype around somebody and honestly I’ve never seen a full match of hers until [TLC] — I’ve seen clips and I’ve never seen a full, full match. So, maybe I have maybe I’ve seen one or two but I think that when there’s a lot of hype and that sort of thing it makes it almost harder sometimes for the talent to kinda live up to the packages and to the hype and they’re expecting something completely different than something they’ve seen before. And that’s really hard to do. I liked her body language, I liked her presentation. I liked her persona, she seemed really comfortable with what she’s doing but yeah there were some certain things and there weren’t necessarily super crisp and anything like that and that and it could be the first time, it could’ve been the first time she’s worked with Emma or whatever.”
Of course, Asuka and Emma have tangled before in NXT which is one of the reasons why Emma was chosen for the role.
“[The match at TLC] was a little long.” Edge continued, “but even going back to the NXT stuff I’ve watched and I’ve never… I don’t know… I’ve just never really bought in. And it’s not because I don’t want to or anything like that. I just, I don’t know. Even the entrance and everything it’s very Nakamura-esque and he was doing it first so it just, I don’t know.”
“I’ve never really understood the hype and then last night as I’m watching [at TLC] and I know the ‘powers that be’ hate the head-to-head thing and I was like, ‘ooo that’s not gonna go over well’… more than that what I didn’t get was using an ankle lock on a night when Kurt Angle is stepping back in a WWE ring for the first time in eleven years and it’s actually being used in the main event as something pretty pivotal. Why do you do it as a spot that goes nowhere? That doesn’t lead to anything that leads to kinda getting pitched outta the ring that leads to a trapped-leg German, okay cool but still didn’t lead to anything consequential to the finish. It didn’t make sense to me and those things that I see and I’m like ‘mmm somebody doesn’t get it,’ you know what I mean? Ah…maybe I’m being a d-ck… I don’t know.”
They said that they’re still willing to give it some time. Hopefully, Asuka grows on them so Edge and Christian will get on board the Asuka train, but from the sound of things, it might be a long time before they’re ready.
