A few weeks ago the landscape changed in a big way when Drew McIntyre defeated Cody Rhodes to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion. Since then Drew has had a target on his back, and Sami Zayn recently earned the right to challenge for the title when he won a fatal four way match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Anticipation has been building for Sami’s big title match with Drew and the two stars clashed when they stepped into the ring at the Royal Rumble on Saturday.
Sami and Drew pulled out all the stops as they tried to wear each other down. At one point Drew McIntyre hit Sami Zayn with the Futureshock DDT three times in a row, but Sami still managed to kick out.
Shortly after Sami went for the Helluva Kick, but Drew dodged it then connected with a Claymore. Drew pinned Sami as Zayn got his foot on the ropes to break up the count.
Drew McIntyre argued with the referee as he backed him into a corner. As Drew turned around Sami connected with the Helluva Kick for a two count. The action spilled to outside and Drew McIntyre powerbomed Sami through the announce table.
Back in the ring Drew pummeled Sami as he told him to stay down. Sami responded with an Exploder then went for another Helluva Kick as Drew countered with a Claymore.
McIntyre refued to pin Sami and instead waited for him to get to his knees before he hit another Claymore to retain the title.
