Drew McIntyre made his WWE debut in 2009 as “The Chosen One” but he quickly diminished into a lesser role for the product. Even though Vince McMahon himself introduced Drew, a jobber status soon plagued him and it led to his eventual release in 2014.
After Drew McIntyre left Vince’s Hall Of Headlocks he found much more success in TNA and the world’s indie promotions. He grew a lot while traveling the globe and now Drew is back in WWE looking to make a real impact this time (no pun intended).
They are clouting Drew McIntyre as being undefeated as he heads toward NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III to challenge Bobby Roode for his NXT Championship. Apparently Drew’s time in 3MB where he lost every week doesn’t seem to matter now. He’s working with a clean slate and it looks as if Drew is seizing this opportunity for a second chance.
McIntyre recently spoke to Edge and Christian on their Pod Of Awesomeness about how different it is this time around for him.
“All of the lessons, the ups and downs, everything I’ve been through and going up in circles the world has really taught me to be a top guy and I’m ready for the position,” McIntyre said. “I’m ready for that responsibility I’ve been a top guy for many companies and everything I’ve been through has got me to this point. Also, everybody calls me ‘sir’ when they say ‘dude’ to everyone else who’s the same age I just turned thirty-two last month [..] everyone thinks I’m in my late-forties. But I’ve got some time as they say. Physically I’ve been working pretty hard and growing up a lot.”
“I watch myself back on tape not that long ago and I remember I had a match with [Undertaker] and I was supposed to do something bigger with Taker — I looked at myself and how I looked back then and I said: ‘wow I wouldn’t have put that guy against that guy.’ And then I look at myself now and I’m like ‘oh I get it now.'”
“People like [Triple H] and stuff would tell me at the time I see what they were saying and when they saw I believe this.” In the end, Drew said he believes he is more ready mentally now for that kind of responsibility.
We might just see something magical happen at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III if Drew McIntyre can topple Bobby Roode. But if the NXT Championship does change hands in Brooklyn, Drew says he’s more than ready at this point in his career to take that ball and run with it.
