Dominik Mysterio took his career to the next level when he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 41 back in April. In recent months AJ Styles has been chasing the belt and finally got his shot at the title when he clashed with Dominik Mysterio at SummerSlam.
Mysterio entered first followed by AJ Styles. The Phenomenal One drove an Eddie Guerrero style low rider into the stadium with his son Avery in the passenger seat. As Styles got out of the car he mimicked Eddie Guerrero’s movements while wearing Eddie Guerrero inspired gear.
Early on Dominik dominated the match and the fans seemed to be split as they chanted “AJ Styles” and “Dirty Dom.” Styles got some offense in and tried to go for a frog splash, but Dom got his legs up to block it. Dom followed up with a 619 on The Phenomenal One. He tried for a frog splash of his own and AJ managed to grab Dom’s leg as he locked in the calf crusher. Dom broke the hold when he grabbed the bottom rope.
Mysterio removed a turnbuckle pad and the referee noticed. As the referee was putting the turnbuckle pad back on Dominik went to the outside and grabbed a chair. He handed the chair to AJ then collapsed like Eddie Guerrero used to do. Styles one upped him and wrapped the chair around his own head before the referee could turn around. When the ref finally did turn around he was understandably confused as he didn’t know who to believe.
After some back and forth AJ locked in the calf crusher again and Dom’s boot came off. Styles almost hit the ref by accident then he turned around and Dominik hit AJ with the boot and followed up with a frog splash to win the match.
Dominik celebrated after the match as a new camera angle was shown which revealed that Dominik unzipped his boot earlier in the match to make it easier to get out of the hold.
