WWE announced earlier this week that WWE Champion AJ Styles would defend his title against James Ellsworth on SmackDown, but the match didn’t happen. At the beginning of the show James Ellsworth was shown coughing and sneezing backstage, and the SmackDown authority figures decided that Ellsworth was in no condition to compete.
AJ Styles appeared on Miz TV later in the show, and Miz made it clear that he wants a shot at the WWE Championship. Dean Ambrose then made his way down to the ring followed by Dolph Ziggler. A brawl broke out and eventually Luke Harper got in on the action.
Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan then announced that The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Dean Ambrose and Luke Harper would face off in a fatal 4-way elimination match to determine the number 1 contender for the WWE Championship.
The Miz was the first to go after Dean Ambrose eliminated him with a roll up. Luke Harper was eliminated next after Dolph Ziggler hit him with a superkick and Dean Ambrose followed up with Dirty Deeds.
It came down to Dolph Ziggler and Dean Ambrose, then The Miz returned. Miz distracted Dolph Ziggler and lured him out of the ring. Ziggler hit Miz with a superkick and Ambrose followed up by slamming Ziggler into the ring post before throwing him back in the ring. Miz grabbed Dean’s leg as he was getting back in the ring, so Ambrose tossed him into the barricade.
When Dean Ambrose got back in the ring Dolph Ziggler hit him with a superkick to end the match.
