On the very first SmackDown episode of the new era last week Dolph Ziggler overcame Bray Wyatt, John Cena, Cesaro, Apollo Crews and Baron Corbin to win the right to face Dean Ambrose for the WWE Championship at this years SummerSlam.
Ziggler wasn’t many fans first pick with the likes of AJ Styles and Bray Wyatt currently the firm favourites to reach the top of WWE with the title around their waist, but it was the showoff who won the six-pack challenge and now he goes toe-to-toe with The Lunatic Fringe.
This week’s episode of SmackDown picked up where last weeks left off with Ambrose and Ziggler face to face in the ring. Ziggler put his heart and soul in the promo and after he was attacked by Bray Wyatt he made it evident that he was out to prove that he was good enough. The match that followed then proved all of Zigglers doubters wrong as he defeated The Eater of Worlds to maintain his place in the World title match at SummerSlam.
Ziggler is a former two time World Champion, his first title came when he was in the middle of his heel run alongside Vickie Guerrero, whilst his second title run is one of the best remembered cash in’s in WWE history after he defeated Alberto Del Rio the night after WrestleMania 29.
It was this title run where Ziggler suffered a concussion and was forced to drop the title and so labelled as injury prone. Since then Ziggler hasn’t come close to a third world title reign and instead has been stuck on the mid-card of WWE’s programming.
As the showoff stated himself, he has fought his way back up to the top and could easily have given up when he was refused chances that he deserved over the past few years. Ziggler has held other Championships over the past four years but he has never been as close as he is now to another reign.
Dean Ambrose has proved that the title doesn’t have to be held by a superstar who is the face of the company, it doesn’t have to be a superstar who is good to watch or who puts on a show in the ring. Dean has proved that if fight hard enough then you will eventually be given what you deserve.
Dean sat through both of his former team mates winning the World Championship on multiple occasions before he was finally given the chance to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase on the same night that he won it two months ago.
Then after months and many losses to Seth Rollins in title matches, Dean was finally able to defeat the former World Champion twice in the same week and prove that he is a worthy champion.
Ambrose and Ziggler are much more similar than any of the WWE locker room or WWE Universe would care to admit. They are two guys who began their WWE career as a group and were constantly over looked in favour of others.
Kenny Dykstra was the stand out member of The Spirit Squad and Seth Rollins was the stand out member of The Shield. Both men stood their ground and continued to fight despite the fact that it was made obvious that they weren’t the first choice.
This match hasn’t been given as much hype as Seth Rollins vs Finn Balor over on Raw for the newly named and designed Universal Championship or even The Viper vs The Beast in a match that has been 14 years in the making, but this match has the ability to steal the show and finally prove that the underdogs can be the best.
Ambrose and Ziggler both have the ability to prove that SmackDown can be the better brand. The fact that the two brands have been divided now means that superstars who don’t usually have opportunities given to them are finally being pushed to the top.
Superstars who are usually lost amongst the shuffle are finally finding their way to the top and Ambrose and Ziggler are the best example of this. Even though many people don’t think Ziggler deserves this opportunity, this is the closest that The Showoff has come to a title in almost four years and it seems that it is definitely long overdue.
