Last night on Monday Night Raw The Undertaker officially declared that he was entering The 2017 Royal Rumble match, a match that The Deadman won back in 2007.
Undertaker hasn’t appeared in a Royal Rumble match since 2009 and now he steps back into the 30-man Rumble in his home state of Texas.
It has been thought now for many years that any year could be Taker’s last, and it could well be that this year we finally see Undertaker win the Rumble for the second time and not only join an elite list of men, but also go on to face John Cena in their marquee match at WrestleMania 33.
John Cena faces AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble and could make history with a win over The Phenomenal One. It would be Cena’s 16th World Championship, which would allow him to tie the record with Ric Flair, but make history in his own right since all his World Title reigns were under the WWE umbrella.
Even if Cena doesn’t win at the Rumble, WWE could allow him to make history at a smaller pay-per-view, like Elimination Chamber, before Undertaker decides who he wants to face at WWE’s biggest event of the year.
This is highly unlikely, since it is the 30th anniversary of the Royal Rumble this year, it seems WWE are pulling out all of the stops and this includes putting the likes of Goldberg and Brock Lesnar in the Royal Rumble match, which means that if Cena is going to make history, it will be at the Alamodome in San Antonio on January 29th.
It will be interesting to see what number Undertaker draws in the historic match since he was the first person to win the match from number 30 back in 2007.
It is also worth noting that when Undertaker announced his participation in the match, Braun Strowman was shown watching on from backstage. Undertaker is no stranger to defeating what WWE has deemed an undefeatable beast over the past few years, after all, it was Undertaker who managed to defeat The Great Khali in a Last Man Standing match.
Undertaker is the original unbeatable beast and he won’t be bothered by the prospect of standing in the ring with Braun Strowman. If anything, Taker should be more worried about standing in the same ring with Brock Lesnar for the first time since the end of their brutal rivalry back at Hell in a Cell in 2015.
Brock has moved on since then and now has Goldberg in his sights as he sets out on a revenge mission, but it would be interesting to see if the two former enemies do cross paths once again.
Undertaker deserves the chance to main event WrestleMania for the final time if he is walking away from WWE this year, as much as many people thought he should have walked away in Texas last year, it seems his destiny could be in Orlando instead.
This is the first year in four that the Royal Rumble winner hasn’t been predictable, WWE has done well to build enough stories around the event that anyone could win the match. There is a theory that Seth Rollins could win it and then decide to call out Triple H and face him in the main event instead.
It is the most entertaining time of the year to be a WWE fan and given the recent success of Wrestle Kingdom 11, WWE really want to pull out all of the stops to prove that they are one of the best wrestling promotions in the world still.
Keeping the Royal Rumble winner under wraps and making it a huge surprise could be a great way of doing this. There will also be a number of surprise entrants in the match as well, which will possibly include NXT superstars, as there are rumours that Tye Dillinger could enter at number 10.
It is shaping up to be a well-rounded show and the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of the annual over-the-top battle royale. We are now less than three weeks away from the event that begins the Road to WrestleMania and Undertaker is the current favourite amongst WWE fans, it will be worth seeing if that changes as we get closer to the event at the end of January.
