Roman Reigns was originally set to challenge Goldberg for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36 months ago, but he dropped out of the event due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Big Dog had been taking a hiatus from WWE since March, but he returned in a big way at the SummerSlam pay-per-view on Sunday.
Bray Wyatt picked up a major win over Braun Strowman in the main event, and Wyatt won the Universal Championship in the process. After the match Roman made his surprise return and took out both Wyatt and Strowman then held up the Universal Championship.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Roman’s return wasn’t just kept secret from the fans, it was also kept a secret from the other WWE superstars backstage.
The Big Dog made it clear he wants a shot at the belt, and with WWE Payback set to air next Sunday it will be interesting to see if Roman gets a shot at the Universal Title at the pay-per-view.
