On Friday night Roman Reigns successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Riddle on SmackDown, but his celebration after the match was short-lived as Brock Lesnar made his return. The Beast is now set to challenge Roman Reigns for his title at SummerSlam next month in a Last Man Standing match. However, original plans called for Randy Orton to challenge Roman at the event.
Fightful Select reports that WWE started putting plans in place for Brock Lesnar’s return after it became clear that Randy Orton wouldn’t be able to compete. Shortly before 5 PM on Friday word started going around backstage that Brock Lesnar could be returning, but Brock was not featured on the internal rundowns that were handed out before the show.
In regards to whether or not Lesnar’s return was a reactionary move to the Vince McMahon allegations, it was noted that plans for his return started coming together three weeks ago. The investigation was already underway, but WWE started planning for Brock Lesnar’s return before the Wall Street Journal story was released.
SummerSlam will air on Saturday, July 30th from Nissan Stadium in Nashville, TN. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
