History was made in August of 2021 when CM Punk made his debut with All Elite Wrestling. Punk returned to wrestling after seven long years and he went on to become a two time AEW World Champion.
CM Punk’s run with AEW didn’t come without controversy as he was involved in a backstage altercation with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks following the All Out pay-per-view in 2022. The Second City Saint also got into a physical altercation with Jack Perry at All Out in 2023 which led to Tony Khan firing CM Punk shortly after.
This week on Friday Night SmackDown, Cody Rhodes got into a heated exchange with Kevin Owens. Security kept the two separated, so it never got physical, but Cody was still livid when he got backstage.
When The American Nightmare was making his way through the back he crossed paths with Carmelo Hayes who informed Cody that everyone feels Kevin Owens is telling the truth. Cody and Carmelo then started shoving one another before SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis stepped in.
Following his altercation with Cody Rhodes on SmackDown, Carmelo Hayes took to social media to reference CM Punk’s previous backstage altercations when he posted the following:
“Ran into Cm Punk.Just gave me the best advice to never lose a backstage fight again #SmackDown”
