Cody Rhodes made his big return to the ring at the Royal Rumble back in January, and he ended up punching his ticket to WrestleMania 39 when he won the 30 man Royal Rumble match. There was a lot of hype going into the WrestleMania 39 main event, but ultimately Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
While Cody Rhodes didn’t pick up a win at WrestleMania 39 he did manage to defeat Dominik Mysterio at Money in the Bank last weekend. Following the event Cody Rhodes was asked during the post-show press conference if he thinks his momentum has slowed down since WrestleMania, and he recalled some interesting advice that John Cena gave him.
“We don’t have to get super inside baseball, but I have a very specific task that is in front of me. I have a very specific…behind the scenes and on the camera, the thing that I want, the thing that I came back to get. One of the things that John Cena told me. He said, ‘you could be the champ without wearing the title, but you have to be honest with yourself.’ Look at the numbers everywhere you go. Look at the numbers on everything you put out. If they’re telling you it’s cruising and it’s going, because there is a difference between soup du jour and equity in someone we’ve gotten behind and has earned your trust and all of that. If those numbers support that, then you’re on the right path. I have been blessed that has been the case. Momentum wise. There is a task in front of me. I feel we’re on the right path.”
While Cody isn’t in the title picture right now he has been involved in a major feud with Brock Lesnar over the last few months. Even though the match hasn’t been officially confirmed right now all signs point to a third Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes match taking place at SummerSlam.
