Cody Rhodes was defeated by Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, and he confronted The Tribal Chief the next night on the Raw after WrestleMania. Cody demanded a rematch which Reigns refused, but Roman accepted a challenge for a tag team match which led to Brock Lesnar offering to team with Cody Rhodes to face Solo Sikoa & Roman Reigns later in the night.
Brock Lesnar ended up turning on Cody Rhodes before the match could begin, and since then Cody has been trying to get his hands on The Beast Incarnate. Anticipation for Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes at Backlash has been at an all time high over the last few weeks and the two stars finally clashed on Saturday night.
As Brock was walking around the ringside area making his entrance Cody dove outside of the ring to knock Lesnar down and hit him several times with the steel ring steps and a chair before the bell even rang. Cody brought the chair in the ring, but the referee grabbed it and called for the bell.
Cody continued to bring the fight to Lesnar early on, but ultimately Lesnar got the upper hand and took Cody to Suplex City for several minutes. At one point Cody grabbed a turnbuckle pad as Brock was suplexing him and Cody ended up ripping it off to expose the turnbuckle. Cody dropkicked Lesnar’s knee and Lesnar got busted open as he went face first into the turnbuckle.
The American Nightmare hit Brock with the Cody Cutter then the Disaster Kick and followed up with another Cody Cutter. Cody then hit Brock with Cross Rhodes twice, but Brock kicked out. Cody went for a third Cross Rhodes which Brock reversed into the F5. Cody managed to kick out. Brock put Cody in the Kimura and Cody used The Beast’s weight against him then ended up pushing Brock’s shoulders to the mat to get the three count.
After scoring the win Cody made a quick exit while Brock looked shocked inside the ring.
