Back in August, Kevin Owens challenged Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Bash In Berlin, and Cody walked out with the title after it was all said and done. Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes were still on good terms following the title match at Bash In Berlin, but their friendship has deteriorated since then.
The Prizefighter took issue with Cody Rhodes teaming with Roman Reigns at Bad Blood, so he attacked Cody Rhodes in the parking lot after the show. Since then the two stars have been involved in a heated rivalry which has escalated with each passing week.
Owens and Rhodes finally clashed at Saturday Night’s Main Event and The American Nightmare made his way out to the ring wearing the legendary Winged Eagle belt.
Early on in the match Cody Rhodes started selling an ankle injury as the commentators talked about how Chad Gable injured his ankle earlier this month on SmackDown.
Cody dominated the match for a few minutes, but Kevin Owens got the momentum on his side when he hit Cody with a superkick outside the ring then cleared off the announce table. Owens and Rhodes brawled on the announce table and Cody followed up with the RKO to Owens, but the table didn’t break. Back in the ring The American Nightmare connected with a Cody Cutter for a two count.
Owens went for the Stunner, but Cody reversed it into Cross Rhodes. Before Cody could hit the move Owens got out of it and shoved him into the referee. KO connected with the Stunner. However, no one was there to count the pin. A new ref ran down to count the pin as Cody kicked out at two.
Rhodes connected with a superkick then went for a Disaster Kick. Owens ducked and Cody hit the second referee by accident. Kevin Owens grabbed a chair. He swung it at Cody, but Cody ducked and countered with a Cody Cutter. The American Nightmare hit the Cross Rhodes on the chair as the first ref got back up and counted the pin.
